Open
Source. Two words that are becoming more main stream everyday. Is
this a good thing? If you think about it, the more popular open source
software becomes, the closer it is to becoming what it was not meant
to be. To me open source software is the punk rock of software… Like
punk rockers, open source programmers don't do it for the money, we do
it to express ourselves. |
Public IP's software is mostly open source. It's been built using
100% open source (commercial licensing has been purchased for some of the source
code to avoid re-releasing modified code as specified in the GPL).
The source code is available for the Public IP gateway and authservers (WiFiDog fork), but there is no public release for the source code used to create the
interfaces in Zone Control… yet.
If we did publicly release the same code used on the production servers, then
we would risk system failure. Some stupid Turkish hacker would surely shut
us down, or wipe out the site. We would like to see third party management
consoles distributed. If you are a programmer maybe you can take-on the challenge…
or you can be patient and wait.
The ideal of open source drives Public IP. We need less corporate crap in this
world. Corporations care nothing for progress and ingenuity. The only thing
that matters in the corporate world is getting money as quickly as possible,
with as little effort as possible. It's these same corporate entities, that
run the government by keeping the politicians in their back pockets. It's
corporations that make the laws that run our lives. Corporations deciding how
you dress, what you eat… By using open source software you contribute to
real people, and make things a little bit better for all of us.
Here's the source code that's "ready". It's really just vaporware right
now, but you can play with it. It will be updated with more documentation
soon. http://www.publicip.org/mirror/dists/source/
